The Crowns of Service

Have you ever considered or thought about what gifts you will receive for your service to Almighty God? His Word gives us a list of the many crowns to be distributed to His many servants for their work in His field. The Apostle Paul admonished in His final writings what we must do in our quest for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith. The idea is that we push forward, trusting in God for our strength and endurance. In the future is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:5-8; Crown of righteousness is for living a godly life. Knowing that any moment Jesus will be coming back. Keeping an absolute focus on Him and His word.

But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short while in person, not in spirit were all the more eager with great desire to see your face. For he wanted to come to you I, Paul more than once and yet satan hindered us. For who is our hope or joy or crown of exultation? It is not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming. For you are our glory and joy. 1 Thessalonians 2:17-20. The Rejoicing Crown is for those that are sharks for Christ and have led many to Jesus. Those that are eagerly working in God’s field to bring others into the fold to reap the harvest will receive this reward. Go, Therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and The Holy Spirit.

Teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even until the end of the age. (Matthew 28:19-20)

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. Then they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Therefore, I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others; I myself will not be disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:23-27) Paul describes this race as in one in which you are competing in. The competition of self-discipline against satan and his crafty lies and attacks he puts in our paths to distract us, and get us off track from God’s best and plan for our lives. We need to remember we have an enemy who doesn’t want us to prosper, or to live a life for Christ.

The Victor’s crown or the imperishable crown seems to be for the one that denies himself, and does the will of God. This includes avoiding sin when it falls in their path, as well as saying no to some things that might bring attention to one own self. It’s the idea of denying yourself to help others around you that God puts in your path. This may include helping others whether it be monetarily, time, or some other need.

Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as Lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfolding crown of Glory. You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble. Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time. 1 Peter 5:1-6 The Crown of Glory seems to be for those in clergy, pastors, preachers, Sunday School Techers and the other leaders within the church who share The Word of God.

For the sun rises with a scorching wind and withers the grass; and its flowers fall off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of his pursuits will fade away. Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which The Lord has promised to those who love Him. James 1:11-12

I know your tribulation and your poverty (But you are rich), and the blasphemy by those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of satan. Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt by the second death. Revelation 2:9-11 The last two are The Crown of Life for those who are persecuted Christians as they have shared their testimony. While he allows martyrs in the church age, and tribulation, our sovereign and righteous God will make this worth their time in compensation for their service.

Much like the apostle Paul in his testimony when Jesus met and blinded him on the road to Damascus, we who are Christians have a testimony to share with the rest of the world. We shouldn’t compare our experiences with those of others thinking that one is more impactful than another. God will put people in our path to share our testimony with who will understand, and can help them on their journey. We need to remember God is in control and we need to submit to His instruction, and listen with our hearts when His Spirit prompts us to move or act.
